The Gayborhood Foundation is a non-profit worldwide organization dedicated to finding and empowering residential areas of exceptional gay sanctuary. We build rewarding relationships with these gay neighborhoods (#Gayborhood) serving as spaces where gay people can live, thrive and make a significant impact on society without fear.
Why do we do what we do?
Our work takes us around the globe – LGBTQI+ individuals make up approximately 13.8% of the worldwide population. Great strides have been made in improving the safety and lives of these people around the world, yet there are still many neighborhoods where it is not safe for our community. By celebrating and promoting safe #Gayborhood areas we aim to encourage further development of spaces where it is not only safe, but exceptionally safe, to be gay.
Why be a Gayborhood?
There are many benefits to a thriving gay population in your local area. Regardless of whether you’re in a #Gayborhood or not, there doesn’t exist a place in the world where gay people don’t live. They just might not be that visible! If you’re living in a #Gayborhood it means you’re living in a progressive, forward thinking neighborhood. Congratulations! But there are many other transformative benefits too (such as the ‘Gayborhood effect’ – where house prices literally go up, in some areas by as much as 40%!)
How does my local area become a Gayborhood?
Your area may already be a #Gayborhood – check the list! If not and you believe your local area could become an internationally recognized #Gayborhood then you should submit a short statement explaining your reasons to us through our contact page. Each year our panel of experienced trustees meet to discuss which areas we believe should be included on the list.
Who we are
We have over 300 expert trustees from every continent. They range from prominent members of the media, lawyers with long histories of LGBTQI+ advocacy, organizers of Pride events, and front-line fundraisers. Many have worked with other international LGBTQI+ foundations, charities, nonprofits and TIAMU.
Our trustee membership list is currently closed. We will be opening our membership again in late 2021. We would particularly like to hear from people interested in becoming members from Africa and the Middle East. Contact us for more details.
